Neanderthals: Why Did We Make It, When They Didn’t?

Reports raced across the Internet this month that a Harvard University molecular biologist was suggesting we’d soon need an “adventurous female human” to act as a surrogate mother for the first genetically engineered Neanderthal baby. This set people’s imaginations ablaze, but the scientist, George Church, later clarified that this was simply a rather far-out hypothetical taken from his new book, “Regenesis,” which explores the possibilities of synthetic biology. We may indeed be able to rewire DNA to engineer a living Neanderthal in the not-so-distant future, but perhaps no one should start designing prehistoric onesies just yet…
